Radical Self Care™ is a guiding principle, a cornerstone for one’s life that informs the way we weave our self care practices into our responsibilities to create a whole new health and wellness paradigm. The Radical Self Care™ program provides tools and instructions to navigate the sometimes forbidden terrain of self care and well being. It gives people unapologetic permission–as well as a roadmap–to focus on those areas of self care that greatly enhance one’s well being: from sleep and exercise to spiritual practice and simplification. With Radical Self Care™ the key is to become consciously aware of the direction in which we want our lives to unfold and then make the commitment to the well-being that will take us there.
The impact of living from a greatly expanded platform of self care can be dazzling. New doors begin to open. Opportunities appear in many areas of our lives. We are dwelling in a mind and heart that is appreciative and compassionate, revealing and shaping dramatic new possibilities in every domain of life. Importantly, when we care for ourselves well, we are able to give more of our gift to the world.
Margo began to create the distinctions of Radical Self Care™ twenty-three years ago when she became very ill from the effects of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which caused her bustling life in New York City and Paris to come a complete standstill. “For several years, as I worked to become well, I was forced to re-examine every area of my daily life in order to make the changes in lifestyle that would allow my body to heal. In doing what was necessary, I realized that some of the new ways I was eating, sleeping, exercising, and focusing on relationships were considered radical or extreme by many people I knew, who questioned my methods, sometimes accusing me of being selfish, narcissistic, spoiled. This was despite the fact that what I was doing for myself, was the same as what anyone might do to care for a child or ill friend. It was simply caring for someone worth caring for: me!”
Instead of recoiling she embraced and expanded her new way of being. She recognized that radical was absolutely what was required. A radical medical treatment is said to remove the source of a disease, rather than simply treat the symptoms. It is making a change of a sweeping nature. Radical self care addresses the root cause, and requires us to grow new roots, to feed ourselves in new ways. In this case, radical is required because it is not enough to simply change the way we talk about self care. It is not enough to read an interesting book that explores the connection between stress and health. Radical is required because of the generations of conditioning which say we should “tough it out”, that we should accept that’s how everyone else does it, we should behave like everyone else, that we should be heroic, or deny ourselves needed help or support. Our conditioning requires a strong and unyielding commitment to self care.
